The Reel: Why PITCH is a show that matters?
On September 22, 2016; FOX premiered a new show about the first African American Woman to enter the National Baseball League. Television programs that not only promote positive images of women and girls pursing their goals but also have minorities in the their lead cast are more important than ever in today's society. We have shows such as Empire, Scandal, How to Get a Way with Murder, Quantico, Grey's Anatomy and now Pitch.
Here are my thoughts on the show...
Pitch stars Kylie Bunbar, Michael Beach and Mark-Paul Gosselaar. In the premier episode, we see Kylie's character Ginny Baker step up to the daunting challenge of being the first African American Woman to enter the Major Leagues. Guided by her father's instruction and her talent, Ginny Baker like many women faces a multitude of pressures. Whether its living up the pressure to succeed as imposed by your parents or yourself, the doubts of everyone regarding your talent or the uncomfortable tensions women face when they are belittled by their male colleagues; Ginny Baker like many women steps up to the plate. Though, I am not sports inclined Ginny's story deeply resonated with me as a young professional female. Pitch not only has great acting but also has a story line that will reflect the shared experiences of women and our willingness to confront challenges. Beside its a great example of Black Girl Magic!
