The Briefing: Beyoncé's Lemonade - an ode to Pan-African Feminism!
Everyone is humming and sipping on Beyoncé's "Lemonade" since its release on Saturday! But the album and its visual album companion has strong imagery. Not only is the imagery representative of feminist ideology but also pan african culture.
But how might you ask....well here are a few theories. As Beyoncé don's the yellow Roberto Cavalli dress in one of the Lemonade's scenes, she embodies a yoruba deity named Oshun. She also features French-Cuba sister group Ibeyi, who incorporates yoruba spirituality in their music. But Beyoncé continues to seamlessly wove in pan-african feminism by incorporating the poetry of Somali-British laureate poet Warsan Shire. Credited for having worked on film adaptation and poetry, Shire's poetry served as the interludes between songs. Take a listen to Warsan Shire's poetry below!
