The Briefing: The Charleston's Emanuel A.M.E. Church shooting, a moment for reflection and remembrance
When we reflect on the recent shooting at Charleston's Emanuel A.M.E. Church, we must first remember the role it has placed in African American History!
Founded in 1816 by Morris Brown, Emanuel A.M.E. Church, affectionately known as Mother Emanuel was created as a safe haven for African American parishioners looking for a place to worship. In 1822, Denmark Vesey, the then leader of the church plotted a rebellion against enslavement. An active participant in the Underground Railroad, Emanuel A.M.E. Church used community activism to actively fight against slavery and racism. It even became a central fixture in the Charleston Civil Rights Movement. The Emanuel A.M.E. Church embodies the rich history and culture of African Americans in Charleston.
